Abstract: Zhaou was an important barbor in Zhejiang Province during the Qing Dynasty. This article examines the role of Zhapu in coastal defence, shipping, and foreign trade. The article also discusses the formation and activities of social organizations such as guild halls(huiguan), brokerages, and other organizations, and the commercial situation in Zhapu.
