Abstract: The compilation of “collected essays on statecraft”was an extremely important cultural phenomenon from the late Qing to the beginning of the Republican period. The author maintains that collected essays on statecraft represented the establishment of a genre of writing. The statecraft research that these works recorded actually belonged to the category of political culture and these compilations captured the intellectual dynamics of change in traditional Chinese thought.
