Abstract: Bamboo and lumber occupied a prominent place among the total circulation of commodities during the early Qing.The establishment of a special customs duty on bamboo and lumber provided further evidence of its importance in the over-all trade of this period. Taking the long-distance circulation of bamboo and lumber as its primary focus, the article uses customs receipts to establish the major trade routes and uses a variety of methods to estimate roughly the volume of trade in bamboo and lumber during the Qing.
