Abstract: In the eighteenth century, the Qing government unified the border regions of the Chinese empire. The unification was preceded by long-term endeavours, initiated in the seventeenth century, to implement policies that would allow the administration of these areas to be highly effective. Broadly speaking, these policies mainly regarder the diffence, the minorities and the development of the frontier regions. The article presents and discusses systematically these three major policy topics.
