This   essay  proves that neither Yuan Shikai’ s nor Xu Shichang’s informing against the Reform Movement of 1898 was the essential condition for the movement’s failure。Furthermore,it was Ronglu who accept the message from Yuan nor Yikuang.Yuan was  not  attached to the reformist group, and Emperor Gguangxu had appreciated Yuan’s ability prior theadvent of the Reformist Group. For Yuan, saving the emperor was  tantamount to saving himself .The later rise of Yuan was not a reward from the Empress dowager for exposing the reforms.

Output Estimate Methods As part of the coinage bronze manufacture of the Qing dynasty, lead mining in Guizhou Province played important roles in the Qing mining industry and on the economic and social development of this frontier area. However, estimates of lead output and sales volumes of this area remain largely obscure for historians, leaving the evaluation of its compact on local society groundless. Based on detailed textual study of the mining factories memoirs of annual sales volumes found in Qing archives, this paper provides a new estimate of the lead output and sales volume in this area and alsoexamines the previous calculatingb methods of mine output volume of the Qing dynasty.

The Qing Jinshenlu Database : A New Source for the Study of Qing Officialdom
    REN Yuxue etal
    journal6    2016, 0 (4): 61-77.
    Abstract3132)      PDF(pc) (3631KB)(4077)       Save
This essay introduces a major new database, based on the Jinshenlu, for the study of Chinese officialdom and Chinese society during the last imperial dynasty, the Qing, who ruled from 1644 to 1911. For almost two centuries, the Qing government and private publishers published a Jinshenlu every three months with the names and particulars of all civil, and sometimes military, officials. We are transcribing 400 of these quarterly editions dating from 1661 to 1917 into a database, beginning with 206 containing approximately 2 800 000 records of 400 000 officials republished by the Tsinghua University Library as the《清代缙绅录集成》. Based on our initial transcription of 652 984 records of 145 770 officials from 47 editions, we demonstrate the potential of these data for the study of official careers. We contrast bannermen, who had their own appointment system, with civil officials who passed the civil service examinations ,and other officials who purchased their appointments. Moreover, we demonstrate that these Jinshenlu records can be linked to records in other systematic sources on the Qing imperial lineage, on examination degree holders , and on office purchasers. The resulting combined data provide an important opportunity to understand Qing political and social elites.

Exploring the Banner People Register Policy from the Law of Qing Dynasty

    Abstract1769)      PDF(pc) (481KB)(1109)       Save
This paper discusses an important issue on the Manchu-Han relationships in the Qing dynasty, namely the differences in the law of Qing dynasty regarding its treatments to different ethnic groups. The distinction between the Manchus and Han people could be barely seen if we only pay attention to the Qing rulers' sinolization sayings that“the Manchus and Han people are one family”and“no distinction between the Manchus and Han people”. But from the household register policy,we may see clearly that the Qing dynasty ruled the Banner people and Han people in different ways.

The northern areas both Jiangsu and Anhui province both flooded in 1906,but the relief measures illustrated the tendency of "favor one more than another" .While northern Jiangsu province s relief was in full swing, the relief of northern Anhui province was barely underway. The study analyzes the phenomenon of favor one more than another from the two provinces different political status, financial importance, regional differences, the impact of war and other aspects to provide some insights on avoiding and ameliorating disasters in relatively backward areas. In the end,Anhui Province followed a new extraordinary path of self- relief, which not only successfully relieved the victims of the flood but also unintentionally surpassed the traditional relief system and began the process of modernization.

The Sino-Japanese War of 1894 and Emprese Dowager Cixi

    Abstract1221)      PDF(pc) (2836KB)(1246)       Save
By the end of the Guangxu Reign, the Beiyang Fleet had developed to the point of possessing 25 warships despite the fact that during this time the Empress Dowager Cixi had misappropriated 5-6 million liang of silver earmarked for naval construction to build the summer palace。Thus we cannot simply attribute China’s defeat in the Sina-Japanese War to the building of the Summer Palace. The fact that there were no further naval acquisitions was due to Cixi’s becoming suspicious of Li Hongzhang. She placed great importance on her sixtieth birthday which she planed to celebrate on a large scale at the Summer Palace and even when the war broke out she was unwilling to change her plans until the situation became dire. Her attitude toward the war went through several stages. At first she had a tough anti-Japanese stance, but after Qing defeats, she adopted a policy of capitulation and attacked the pro-war faction. She sent Li to Japan to sue for peace and encouraged him to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

It is a common phenomenon fo r both the folk sects and the secret societies to be set up in virtue of myth. Therefore,to comprehend these myths profoundly is not only beneficial to the research of the folk sects and the secret societies but also a key to open the door of their histories.Focusing on the key point of“dramatizing”, this article mainly researches on the narrative pattern of “fatuous monarch and treacherous court official vs,the court official w ho has rendered outstanding service”in the myths of the founding of folk sects and secret societies in the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty.Furthermore, it tries to analyze the forming of the Xilu Myth under the historical background of the Heaven and Earth Society and thus finds the answer to the origin of the Heaven and Earth Society.
